However, I will tell you how to set up a free account and you can upgrade from there as needed. After entering your details you will have to then add your social media accounts that you’ll be monitoring with Hootsuite. Also know that Hootsuite will ask for you to authorize access of your account on every social media account that you add.

The Settings

Spend a little time setting up your Hootsuite account before delving right into the dashboard. You want to do this to make sure there is nothing left out in details when setting up your account. 

  1. Go to the settings(toolbar on the left.)
  2. Add details within the pop-up window.
  3. Change any settings such as authentication methods, language, notifications, alerts and other profile information.

With that being done, now you can finally get into working with your Hootsuite settings to ensure that the system is tailored to your needs in the social media management system.

The Hootsuite streams dashboard is where you’ll likely spend a lot of your time monitoring and changing tasks within the management system. The dashboard features three areas that you’ll commonly use; the compose box, the tabs and the streams. Within the dashboard  you can go on to complete other tasks such as scheduling posts, composing messages in the compose box and share links.

How to access and use the compose box

You’ll find that on your screen the compose box is actually at the right of it. There you begin typing the body of text for your message/post. You do have the option of tagging your other social media accounts by using the “@’ symbol as well as selecting from within the dropbox box menu. You can tag any social media account or across social media networks.

  1. Paste it in the link shortener.
  2. Click on “Shrink (this will enable you to save on character count.)
  3. Click on the “Paperclip” icon and add attachments that are images.

Now that you know how to compose a message to get it ready to send, you can now schedule the post.

How to schedule posts

In the compose box, this is where you’ll be able to do a variety of things like create , publish and schedule your next post for customers to view it. You can also give preference to your most used social media accounts by pinning them for priority of scheduled posts.To complete scheduling the post, you can set the date and time by choosing what date and time you’d like the post to go live.

The “Publisher” tab will enable you to get a view of your scheduled messages. Here is where you will make any necessary changes before your set the time and date for your post to go to live view.

First, click on the icon to open Publisher, after that, click on planner and review your drafted and scheduled posts. Then scroll down through your past  scheduled history or you can view the next thing in the queue of your scheduled calendar. 

Note that your past scheduled posts are going to be color coded. The color red means it did not publish. The color green means it has successfully published. For failed published posts you can click on the pencil icon to edit that failed post and prepare to publish it again.

Filter your social media network messages and be able to identify and upcoming calendars gaps. Businesses can also filter Campaigns to immediately isolate content that is based on relevancy.

Content 

When looking at the content tab, you’ll be able to find different  tools like the Bulk Composer and the RSS reader, which they are both highly useful for urgency when preparing multiple posts. 

However, you can also review drafted posts that you’ll need to continue working, especially something that your working on in progress. 

Shown in the list view are drafts and scheduled content, and these drafts and scheduled content can be exported or saved. You just have “Click to Export” any specific posts that you want to export or select all posts for export.

Also, you may have some content sourcing app or more than one installed, they will appear in your sidebar. A perfect example of this is when you are using Google Drive to access different things like your own branded images or an image of something else. It’s helpful to remember that installed apps that contain media in the Composer, in the Media Library.

Businesses can view their team members Content Libraries alternatively, which they can begin composing messages with any approved details. For an increase in visibility of your published posts, you must click on the Promote Tab. Then use Boost for application of an advertising budget. This can be done manually by selecting popular posts or through custom creating an automated campaign. 

Social media networks

  1. At the top of your toolbar, click on your name and share any of your social networks. 
  2. Click on add social network in your streams.

When adding a new stream:

  1. At the top left of your screen; click on the “+Add stream” button.
  2. A pop-up window will appear and you can choose a social network, a profile and a type of stream that you want to use. 
  3. You can add streams by clicking on “+” icons. 

Note that Hootsuite allows only 10 streams per tab.

Hootsuite enables with tools to import your Twitter lists. You can also engage with different Twitter members. How to add a stream:

  1. Add a new stream, 
  2. select Twitter,
  3. select lists, and, 
  4. then profile

Choose from any of your existing lists or you can create a new one within Hootsuite.

Engaging your audience using Hootsuite

Within your Hootsuite dashboard, you can react to users, your audience’s actions on your social media profile. By engaging, you can quote, retweet and add favourites on Twitter. On Facebook you can like, share and reply.

Since conversational threads can become very long almost instantly, you’re social media posts can become viral instantly too. In this case it is highly recommended to create a separate stream for that conversation thread not to overwhelm your social media with trying to locate conversations meant for that particular thread.

Hiding Comments In Hootsuite

Since you might come across negativity in the comments section,  it’s best to address and resolve negative comments and hide that negative comment. Addressing the issue in private is better but do not delete the comment no matter how bad it looks. To do so:

  1. Select ‘hide’ from the drop-down menu.

You, the person who made the comment and their friends will only be able to see and comment. Message moderation of this nature will great help in maintaining a respectable brand reputation for your business.

Measure and analyse in Hootsuite

Hootsuite has and provides its own analytics report tools. To access them, go to the left of your toolbar and select ‘analytics’. However, if you’re a free user, you can create up to 4 analytics reports. By selecting ‘build custom report’ you’ll be able to modify the reports to any particular marketing objectives for your business. You can use one of the Hootsuite templates or custom build your own.

The compiled stats in free reports only refers to basic metrics. These metrics are for follower growth, page engagement, how many likes and most popular links. You can use reports with these analytics to gather a detailed overview of your social media performance with each social media platform. Once the data is gathered, you can further observe the posts on your social media that has received the most engagement. You can use this data to apprise your plan of action.

You can install Hootlet as a browser extension to compose and schedule messages. You can do this while remaining on the same webpage that you’ve originated on. To install it:

  1. Go to ‘tool’ in your toolbar 
  2. Click on “install extension.”

If you want to share with others via Hootlet just highlight the text, right-click on it and then select “share via Hootlet.”

Available on both iOS and Android systems, Hootsuite is available in a mobile app for mobile devices. It enables you to go to compose box, streams, publisher, search and settings while on the go. All streams that you added in the mobile app will sync to the desktop dashboard.

You can monitor if and when people mention certain phrases on a social network. You can collect all posts mentioning “scented candles;” to do this:

  1. Create a new stream and select ‘search’. 
  2. For exact phrase, enter it quotation marks. 

You can create different streams for campaign hashtags, with your brand name it will “mention” stream only picks and pick up messages that you’re business is tagged in.

You can also do a more specific geographical area search. For this:

  1. Click on the arrow icon in the right of the search query box.

(Step 1) Create a Hootsuite account (It’s always free to just create an account)

1. Go to https://hootsuite.com
2. Click Sign Up in the top-right-hand corner.
3. Click to select the plan. (In this case it will be free but you can upgrade if there is a need to)
4. Proceed in entering your information, follow the prompts and proceed to:

(Step 2) Adding 1 or more social networks

You can connect social profiles to Hootsuite to publish and schedule content. You can also monitor the engagement of users from the Hootsuite dashboard. With Hootsuite’s free plan you can manage up to three social networks.

1. Select Streams in the launch menu, from the dashboard.
2. Click Add Social Network.
3. Select a social network from the list.
4. Click Connect and authorize your social accounts to connect them to the dashboard.
5. Review Add social networks.
6. Read the details and add the social profiles you want to use with Hootsuite.

(Step 3) Set up tabs and streams in Hootsuite

Note that, each social network has different stream types.

You will be able to use Search Streams which are usable for finding social activity within different Pages, by use of hashtags, or rich relevant keywords. You can use the tabs in the Hootsuite dashboard to organize different streams into groups.

1. Select Streams in the launch menu.
2. Click the Add Tab at the top-left hand corner
3. Name the tab.
4. Press ENTER.
5. In each tab you click Add Stream.
6. Select a social network in the list on the left.
7. Then select a profile from the drop-down list.
8. Click the streams you want for that profile.
9. Review the Add tabs, Add streams, and add search streams prompts to complete adding them.

(Step 4) Publish posts through the dashboard

1. Click on Composer in the bar at the top of the dashboard.

1. Select App Directory from the menu.
2. Click Install App near the app.
3. Then Click Finish.
